“But I’m scared to let you back in”
“You can do something for me”
“You can forgive me”
“I love you”
Kevin sits next Scotty to watch Paige’s debate, Scotty’s thigh is pushed against his and once when this level of intimacy would have welcomed and enjoyed. Kevin can’t help but feel that the room is getting hotter and that the walls are enclosing in on him. He can’t breathe. The debate has barely started and Paige looks so happy, smiling and she gives him a quick direct smile and he smiles a reassuring smile to Paige in return. He looks at Scotty, who is looking at the stage, but he has a smile that is just reserved for Kevin.
Kevin can’t help but wonder if the smile isn’t just reserved for him but was it used on someone else, on Marcus and the oxygen suddenly feels that it has abandoned the building but in reality the only person it is affecting is Kevin. The only thought that Kevin has is that he needs to leave now. He looks around and he sees a sign for the toilets and without much grace or dignity he quickly gets up, steps over people, trips over peoples bags and over belongings as he rushes towards the sign and to the freedom he has been craving for since he sat down.
Once he is in the toilets he goes to the wash basin and runs the cold water, splashing it over his face and when that didn’t achieve the desired effect he splashes more over his neck and head; whilst he thought about the night before.
Kevin didn’t answer Scotty pleading question or eyes when he asked him “To forgive him?” he just walked over to him and gave him a hug. He had no idea what else he should do, he knew he loved Scotty but could he forgive him for cheating on him, for being with someone else. He couldn’t imagine kissing or touching Scotty in an intimate way, to the point that the hug was becoming uncomfortable at the thought. Kevin drew back from the hug, Scotty could feel Kevin pull back both physically and emotionally and that hurt him more than any punch that no one (not one Walker) could or should have thrown at him.
“We should go upstairs” Kevin said slightly strained.
“You’re...staying...with me...You’re coming home?” Scotty asked hoping not to get rejected by his husband again.
“Yes” Kevin answered determined but his voiced cracked on the s.

Scotty could feel Kevin tense up from literally the moment they sat down, he didn’t understand at first what had caused Kevin’s behaviour and it intensified with every passing moment. Kevin tried to act normal for Paige’s sake but Scotty could see the evitable coming before Scotty. It was at that point that Scotty realized why Kevin was reacting the way he was, it was obvious, it was Scotty himself. It was similar to last night but a more extreme reaction, Scotty tested his theory by pushing and rubbing his thigh with Kevin’s own thigh.
Kevin didn’t realize that Scotty had done the movement on purpose but the reaction was instantaneous, Kevin was out of his sit and running for the toilets, Scotty didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He chooses to follow Kevin knowing how serious an issue this was, with a look to the rest of the Walker not to follow them, he went to the toilets and to try and save his marriage.
Kevin looked at his reflection in mirror and saw his husband, worried, confused but mostly scared and he knew why he was scared, how could they save their marriage when he didn’t want or couldn’t have Scotty touch him, even in the smallest and most innocent way?
“Kevin?” Scotty said as he entered the toilets, he shut the door behind him and noted that the stalls doors were open, this wasn’t the ideal location for this type of discussion but it was private, necessary and it would have to do...for now.
Kevin was still flushed, more from the escape and tripping than the perceived lack of oxygen. He was still looking at Scotty in the reflection until Scotty said his name again “Kevin?” this time gently, Kevin sighed and turned around.
“I’m sorry, I’m not sure what came over me, I just couldn’t stay in there any longer, I felt like I couldn’t breathe” Kevin honestly said but he couldn’t look his husband in the eyes, he could barely look at his face. He was doing everything he could to look everywhere but at Scotty.
“You know what it was about, just like I do” Scotty admitted sadly and he crossed over to Kevin and it broke his heart when he saw Kevin back away from, yet again “damn it, Kevin” he whispered mostly to himself but he knew that Kevin had heard the words as well.
How had he gone from saying he loved Scotty outside minutes earlier and holding his hand in, though he dropped it as soon as he could, he remembered sadly. Scotty watched as the emotions played throughout Kevin’ face, he could see the debate playing inside his head and knew that no matter what he said Kevin would make up his mind, he just hoped he would be part of that future.
“I’m sorry” Kevin said as he straightened himself and then his clothes, he loved Scotty, he could do his. They already had the worse conversation last night, where Scotty told him what actually happened between himself and Marcus, the wine, Marcus’ car, the quickie, the rush, and then realisation of what he had done. Kevin can handle the facts, better than he, Scotty or anyone else predict, he has to handle facts and figures everyday of his life; it’s the outcome that he has trouble with.
The truth that Scotty wanted, needed, found pleasure with someone else, for however a short amount of time, it was all Kevin could think about and Kevin wasn’t sure he could be near Scotty let alone touch him.
“It’s okay” Scotty said patiently, it was the only thing he could think to say “we...we’ll...we’ll just find a way past this...we will” he plead with eyes more than his voice, he was looking directly into Kevin’ eyes and it felt like he was touching his soul, he was begging.
“And if we can’t” Kevin said softly, he wanted to trust Scotty, he loved Scotty more than life itself but he also knew that sometimes love just wasn’t enough and here was the love of his life, his true love, his husband, begging him to find a way past this and right in this moment he just couldn’t see a way.
“I’ll do anything, try anything but please don’t just walk away, from me, from us, please” Scotty asked, he tried walking forward, prepared for Kevin to move backwards or even... push him away. When it became clear that he wasn’t going to grew more confident, still moving slowly he drew Kevin into a tight hug which Kevin returned with a deep sigh.
“I promise you we will find a way through this” Scotty said strongly, though inside he didn’t feel confident, he actually felt a coward for keeping it a secret for so long “I promise you we will find a way through this” he repeated as he stroked Kevin’ hair.
They had no idea how long they stood there but it must have been long enough for one of Paige’s teachers to become either worried or suspicious. They left the debate earlier, without explanation, not the two laughing men that had arrived but a couple who were in serious martial issues.

“Did you sleep?” Scotty asks knowing the answer, both of them had pretended to sleep, Kevin avoiding Scotty’s questions and eventually Scotty was too tired to pester Kevin anymore. He had lain awake until sleep eventually took him.
“Barely, you?” Kevin asked, knowing that Scotty hadn’t gone to sleep either but he wasn’t sure if he was ready for the round of questions that were going to continue. He went to get himself a coffee and looked at Scotty, who nodded in confirmation, they were going to need coffee for the conversation they were about to have, whether Kevin liked it or not.
“Not really” Scotty admitted as he went to get the cream and sugar, he put them on the table and made some toast, whilst Kevin put the coffee on the table and finished of them with the sugar and cream. He went got the butter and jams from the fridge and returned just as the toast was finished and Scotty returned to the table as well.
As a well rehearsed unit, neither had realized what they had done until they sat, they looked at each other, sighed in content and smiled softly, though the smile never quite reached Kevin’ eyes.
“Kevin?” Scotty asked worried, he couldn’t even enjoy a quiet morning with Kevin anymore; he knew it would take time but Scotty couldn’t help but wonder how long it would be.
“It’s nothing” Kevin answered and he shook his body, trying to remove the bad feeling, why couldn’t he just enjoy his husbands’ company without thinking about Marcus, he used to love this time. Silent, quite time, with his lover, his partner, no family but the drama was all around him and he couldn’t escape it.
A voice in the back of his head screaming at him saying ‘He lied to you’ and another one saying ‘He told you the truth’ and he doesn’t know which one is going to win the debate because a third a third voice keeps whispering every time he decides ‘He could cheat again and you would never know’ with a short quick laugh. Kevin is quickly jolted out of this track of thoughts by Scotty’s voice.
“Kevin” Scotty repeats again, a bit longer; obviously he is in his own thoughts but that doesn’t stop Scotty asking Kevin his initially question “do you want to do something today?”
“You’re not working?”Kevin asked surprised, though when he thought about it, he realized Scotty had cut back on the amount of hours he had worked at the cafe “um, what were you thinking?”
“Um, how about a picnic?” Scotty asked tenderly, he had been thinking about the idea last night, semi romantic but not too much pressure, plus a place where they could talk, without either one of them walking away.
Kevin could see the hope in Scotty’s eyes and he couldn’t let him down; not after he had pushed him away so many times the last couple of days
“Okay” he answered hesitantly.
“Really” Scotty said excitedly and smiled as he reached across the table for Kevin’s hands and took them in his own hands “Yes” Kevin laughed, though it still didn’t reach his eyes, he couldn’t help but enjoy Scotty’s enthusiasm “come on let’s get ready” he got up and let go of Scotty’s hand, Kevin used the excuse that he needed to get dress but they both knew the truth, they just couldn’t say it again.

The door slammed shut as they returned from their picnic, Kevin was surprised with the anger that Scotty had shown with that slam, it made Kevin jump slightly.
“Damn it Kevin, how the hell do you think a separation is going to help us?” Scotty yelled walking over Kevin quickly, so quickly, that reflects took over and Kevin pushed Scotty backwards.
The sun was shining over them, they had picked a gorgeous spot on the grass, where the tree leaves were shading them but there were still getting the rays from the sun. It had been a pleasant picnic so far, which meant Kevin knew they had to talk soon, so he thought he would start.
“So, we need to go slow” Kevin says seriously to Scotty and Scotty nods, he agrees and understands, from everything he has seen from Kevin so far they will be going tremendously slow but as long as he has Kevin in his life he is willing to do anything “we need to talk, should probable go to couple’s counsellors” Scotty was surprised that Kevin was the one to suggest this option, he thought he would have to suggest and even push for this suggest.
“Okay, I can live with that” Scotty said smiling, he didn’t touch Kevin, as per the instruction but this was a good first step.
“Scotty there is one another thing I want to suggest” Kevin said hesitantly and waited until Scotty looked at him “a separation” and Scotty did a double take, before Scotty could speak, Kevin started to speak fast “similar to what Tommy and Julia did, take some time apart but still in contact” he said logical.
“You can’t be serious” Scotty asked critically and when he saw Kevin’s face he knew he was, he remembered their separation very well, maybe Kevin had forgot, as he started to pack up the picnic. He looked at Kevin every once in a while as he spat out following sentence “What you seemed to have forgotten, is that their separation nearly destroyed their marriage, both of them cheated and it ruined them for months. Move over” he asked as he picked up the blanket they had been sitting on earlier.
“But it solved the originally issues; Julia’s mistrust of Tommy and her guilt” Kevin could see the logic behind the separation; he couldn’t understand why Scotty couldn’t as well.
All Kevin could hear is the quick laugh that Scotty gave as a response and he finished packing up he looked at Kevin and said “And where are they now!” but all Scotty could really feel was this deep fear of losing Kevin.
Scotty quickly recovered from stumbling over and looked at the shocked face of Kevin, he walked over again to Kevin but again Kevin pushed him, this time harder but Scotty was prepared. Scotty needed to hold his husband and whether his husband would admit it or not, he needed it, it took a few minutes before Kevin’s walls broke down and he start to cry and then he started to punch Scotty in the chest.
“Why, why, why, why?” Kevin kept repeating, Kevin already knew the answers, it wasn’t about answers anymore but the trust that had been broken,
the promises that had been taken and a future that couldn’t been seen anymore.
Once the last of his energy was gone he looked at Scotty and then moved a step backwards, the eyes mirrored his own, the defeat.
“You really want a separation?” Scotty asked perplexed, he had lost hope after that episode, he had been holding on to since he had told Kevin the truth, even over the last two day but that showed he just needed to let Kevin go.
“I think it’s want I need” Kevin answered truthfully, the hope, the optimism that was Scotty had disappear, it scared Kevin, but he knew that he also couldn’t trust Scotty, not right now.
“I don’t think a separation is the right thing, I think it will lead to divorce” Scotty said tearing up, it broke his heart to say what he was saying but he didn’t think there was any other choice.
“Are you saying you want a divorce?” Kevin said with new tears in eyes, he had hope it wouldn’t come this far but a part of him also feels a slight relief. At least you know he won’t be able to cheat on you again, a thought appeared in his head.
There are tears running down both men’s cheeks now and Scotty just nods his confirmation slightly, he isn’t sure if he wants Kevin to see it or not but Kevin does notices it.
Kevin walks forwards and takes Scotty hands, the voices have gone and Kevin leans into Scotty and kisses him sweetly, a goodbye kiss.
“I’m sorry” Kevin says gently.
“I’m sorry, too” Scotty says into Kevin’s ear.

Within a couple of weeks the divorce is finalized, both men still own part of the cafe and over time, Scotty will buy Kevin out of the rest of cafe and the building they own. News spreads around the Walkers soon after the divorce was finalized, once the Walkers became too much for either man to handle; Scotty hires a new head chef and goes to open a new cafe in a different city and Kevin excepts a position in a law firm; as long as it isn’t in this city he is happy.
