Switching Genres - do you dare?

I finished my novel and am subbing it around, which means I'm in the dreaming/planning stage of the next. I'm rereading one of my favorite advice guides: Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass, romping through my idea file, and toying with several teaser ideas to see which, if any, might have wings.

I have a broad range of genres I'm interested in--they always seem to have some sort of speculative element, but my first published book was paranormal, the second will be light sci-fi, and my agent's aware of two other books I have in progress, one of which is high fantasy and the other urban fantasy, and is enthusiastic about both. I don't really feel like I'm switching genres completely, because they're all YA, and the differences between the different projects give me a challenge that makes me excited about the books ( ... )

Thanks for your insight, Megan. I think you're right in pointing out that the new book idea isn't all that far off from what I've written in the past. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I read Give Up the Ghost, btw, and loved it, so I'm looking forward to reading your new books - whatever the genre! :)

I'm all about switching genres. Trying new things. In fact, my YA work improved when I started writing research scholarship. Weird, I think, but hey, whatever works! I say go for it, Kym!
