Roller Derby
So Saturday I discovered the only sport that makes sense to me, Roller Derby. Years back when Philadelphia announced they were forming a team I wrote to them and never heard back so it's been in the back of my mind for a while. When Neil's assistant, the Fabulous Lorraine invited me to photograph her team, the Chippewa Valley Roller Girls, I jumped at the chance. The bout was a mixer between a bunch of teams from around Minneapolis and lasted five hours but really, it could have gone on five more and I would have been fine.
Talking to some of the women afterwards I think one of the things that makes this so special is that most sports take you when you're in peak form and discard you when you're no longer there, and here I'd found a group of women welcomed as they were, celebrated for their talents, into a sport that would only make them better, stronger, faster. It was really life affirming. I left with a mixture of athletic awe at feats of strength, bravery and endurance as well as this wide-cast net of love and support.
