Gripes with geekdom, pt. 1

There's a lot of stuff in the vast panorama of geeky media that has grown increasingly tiresome over the years. Yes, I've been guilty of one or two of these (maybe more) in the past, but that doesn't make them any less irritating. I'm going to make a list of them. Why? Because I'm a bitter hypocrite.

There are precious few exception to the notes above, in my mind, but they do exist. It's just that, as you've mentioned, they've become a crutch for a lot of writers and designers. Why bother coming up with something legitimately new when you can just dress a dead horse up a new costume and beat it with the baby seal of commercial success?

While I agree with you, #'s 3&4 can be used well if they're done correctly and make sense for the setting. I mean I wouldn't have someone running around with Cloud's First Ken willy nilly, but if there is a legitimate reason that makes sense for a massive sword that can split into six different blades then go for it.

But I would also like to add to this list too. As this applies to most everything. But I would like to say that when you take an established character and change their personality, sexual preference, or established set of abilities for the sake of being "marketable" or "risque" you're doing more damage to your overall product. DC I'm looking at you. :|
