Sorry to have talked on the network so much lately, but -- as of today, I've been in Adstring for a whole year. I'll be sixteen in February, too, and I was wondering - do you guys count your birthdays? Do you count yourselves as getting older, I mean.

Shut up, Jet.

[But it's said with affection.]

Hey, you're gonna be as old as me pretty soon.

[That's worthy of a laugh.]

When's your birthday?

February 13th. I wonder if I'll still be there then.

Suppose I'm nineteen right now if we're counting how long I've been here in Adstringendum. Going to be twenty in December.

How old were you when you got here?

It was the end of my Sixth year at Hogwarts, so I had just turned seventeen a few months before that. I have one of those birthdays where I was born too late to be in the year above mine, but I'm always going to end school technically a year older than most.

You've gone to school your whole life, then?

[Yeah, that's the part that Katara's taken away from that.]

We don't keep track of birthdays, or even have them in the traditional sense.

It's a little different in your case, though, isn't it?

It is, yes.

I would not consider those here aging in the traditional sense, however.

Maybe not in the traditional sense, but.. I've lived that extra year. And I feel older.

It's been a year for me, too. I call it older!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks so. Sokka thought it was silly.

No way! We went through a year, right? It should count!

[Behind the smile is a serious thought: If nothing here counts, if it's all for nothing, she can't handle that.

Better to believe somewhere, it means something.]

Right. Just because some magic keeps my body from aging doesn't mean that the time doesn't count.

Personally, I don't see the point of keeping track.

But why not? We're older, even if our bodies aren't aging.

Does it truly matter, though? By counting years, you're only counting empty numbers.

No, you're counting time. It's not empty. Time means a lot of things.
