Locked from Jet:

I need a healer. My friend Jet from home is -- well, he's not really sick, but something has been done with his mind. We were able to snap him out of it at home with the help of his friends and my healing abilities, but we don't have either of those here ( Read more... )

I would be delighted to accept your offer, and I'm glad to hear you are better.

[A pause.] What happened to your friend Jet?

[He has some experience with undoing mind control magic but he doubts it's remotely the same as what he has worked with.]

[He looked at her curiously, unsure if he was ready to leave the topic. But for now he respected her privacy.]

My world is called Auldrant. There are two countries and one religion. Oceans cover much of the surface, continents and islands compose the rest. The climates and landscape is diverse. It's beautiful. In the sky the fon belt can be seen from anywhere.

What about your world, Katara?

That does really sound beautiful. What's the fon belt? And what about the people -- does everyone get along?

[She is curious, earnestly so, and relaxing almost visibly. It's a neutral topic, and one she finds honestly interesting.]

And in my world.. we've got three nations. The Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Water Tribes. I'm from the Water Tribes. We used to have the Air Nomads, too, but the Fire Nation wiped them out a long time ago.

We're at war. But it'll be over soon. Peace for the first time in a century.. I can't wait to go back.

[Ion waited for Katara to elaborate on her own world, sipping his tea and listening with genuine and keen interest.]

I am sorry to hear about the war, but I'm glad it will be resolved. What is the Water Tribe like?

[And to answer her questions.] Th fon belt is a ring of floating fonstones that encircles Auldrant. It's beautiful. As for the people... I think they are like people anywhere. Everyone wishes to live peacefully and well, but war has a way of becoming reality. There has been a recent peace treaty between the two nations, however, and though there is still much to be done I think peace can be made to last.

The Southern Water tribe is.. small. Really small. There aren't a whole lot of us left, and my dad's the chief. We make do, though, and when the men come home from the war? Life'll be easier, I think. The Northern Water Tribe, though?

It's amazing. Enormous, and well-guarded. The buildings are beautiful. We didn't get to stay there very long, but I'm going to go back when I can, just to visit.

[His explanation causes her to quirk her head slightly to the side.]

What's a fonstone?

Was your tribe decimated by the war? [It's what he assumes. It's what happens when wars rage, especially for a whole century.]

I am glad you have somewhere you look forward to returning to!

[Oh. Yes. Fonstones, fonons... not natural to most people. How did one explains?] Fonstones are sacred stones created when the Score is read... Oh but that might not make sense. They're crystals with certain special properties.

Yeah. We couldn't just sit back --

[But she trails off and shrugs, affording him a real smile.]

I'm happy about that, too. No matter what happens here, even the Animus can't take that away. [And she lifts her hand to briefly toy with the charm of her necklace.]

Magical properties? What kind? We don't have anything like that at home.

[Everyone keeps equating fonic abilities to magic. Ion wonders if he should bother to explain the science, or if it's simpler this way.]

Yes. There is always that to hold on to.

[He took another sip of tea to consider her question.] They can be used for many things, light, heat, powering machinery. But their use for the person they are created for is to read the future.

[Katara has had some experience with fortune tellers, but not with actual, earnest-to-goodness telling the future.

She gets up then, heading to the cabinets and rummaging around for a packet of crackers she'd salvaged the day before.]

What do you mean when you say telling the future?

I suppose the simplest way to put it would be to say that the memories of a person's future can be recorded on the fonstones.

[She opens the crackers, offering him one.]

How does a person have memories of the future?

Thank you. [He takes one, but holds it as he considers how to explain.]

Memory particles are just another element of my world. I haven't been able to sense if there are any here, but on Auldrant the planet's memories stretching from past to future all exist together. By utilizing the Seventh Fonon in specific verse, one can crystallize the information and read that person's future.

Though of course the accuracy and detail are often dependent on the Scorer. It is my belief that the Score is not the only future, however, and the strongest memories related to each individual's future are merely one possibility.

[His belief, his hope. But not something he can prove, and not something Guy and Luke would know, so he can hardly ask them if he was right.]

[Katara stares at him for a moment, mouth open slightly, before she clicks it shut. Welp. That must be what it sounds like when she tries to explain bending.

She gives him a look that she really hopes doesn't scream how far over her head that went.]

Oh.

[And then, helpfully:]

Neat!

[He got too technical. He smiles apologetically.]

I am sorry. I meant to ask about your friend. How is his condition?

He's fine. It's -- a little complicated.

[She takes one of the crackers, as if stalling for time.]

He doesn't remember me.
