If you're going to change the entire point/focus of a story via rewrite...

At least make said rewrite make -sense- for longer than 30 seconds of thought...

And if "Wait, why are you - if - that doesn't make sense" makes it into the dialogue from an intelligent character and said character never gets a real answer/explanation...

If that bit of dialogue is actually *in the movie* it's either a writer's finger to the producer/studio, or a "SEQUEL!!!!". Either way, boo.
