Two things:

I liked him as Forest Alamain. That whole arc was one of my favorites, so bah all the other retcon!

And seriously why did they both "firing" or whatever the press was when he was leaving just to bring him back, what is it 2 weeks now, later?!? Double Bah!

There is a reason I can't watch soaps anymore - even if all my old soaps seem to be bring back old characters that I actually recognizes now, *sigh* the '90 were a good time for soaps.

At least they were better written -- for soaps.

John "died" in October. They never took Drake Hogestyn off the cast list despite all the hoopla. It looked obvious from the beginning that it was all just a plot device.

I love the Forest Alamain arc. If they had to switch back to the old Roman to get Deidre Hall back, it was good to find out that he fit into an existing story.

But everything else has been so contrived. John's a mercenary, a priest, a doctor, etc.

Right, at least it made some sense - at least as much sense as that whole arc made, what with everyone being a princess/prince of some kind, stupidly wealthy or supposed to inherit stupid wealth, plus the requisite kidnapped son and burial alive... But I really enjoyed Carly/Bo/Lawrence-Vivian Alamain family nonsense.

John is Days little black dress - when they get stuck in a story thread they trot out John as the fix-it - he's always related to each story some how!

There's casting rumors that Greta and Vivian are returning as part of the DiMera storyline

I'm so going to need some sort of chart to follow this thing. I watched the show religously for years but drifted away. I drifted back after the whole "island of lost souls" storyline. I thought I was getting back on track but...wanders off muttering... lol

I don't think a chart would help. Nothing's constant. It's as bad as Smallville. The writers seem to just start over with John every "season."
