Costumes and Character and Faith: a rant

I finally finished BtVS S8. I had been dangerously spoiled, so I wasn't totally blown away by the ending like Roomie was. As such, it wasn't a disappointment. I didn't really get angry or anything. And I felt like Joss' letter at the end of the final volume was perfect - it totally explained to me what happened in his head, that he's /not/sorry and ( Read more... )

Faith can ONLY be the "dark Slayer" and can't be a full character with conflicting emotions/feelings/etc??

yes! Thank you! I like Faith, and I get annoyed seeing her limited in that way as well. I do understand Faith's narrative role, and I think it would be completely ineffective if she were not a character in her own right. The costuming is a cue that we're supposed to target our experience of the character this way, not ignore everything else underneath it.

That's one of the issues I have with the early seasons of BtVS (1-4), narrative seems to take precedence over character - at least, for the side characters. A lot of the actions/dialogue around Cordy post-X and pre-Wes seem like a watered down version of Cordelia from "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and not the character that she actually had become by that point. Same with Faith - her arc makes sense from hindsight, but while in the throes of watching for the first time through, she seems all plot-device and no character.
