According to a book I found in the library: "Portuguese missionaries who visited Japan

in the sixteenth century came to the conclusion that the Japanese language was the

invention of the Devil, having been devised so as to hinder the spread of the Gospel."

Meanwhile, the Dutch were just selling the Japanese massive amounts of guns, and not worrying much about their religion or other such relatively unprofitable things. Huzzah!
