Title: Bonds of time
Pairing: yamajima friendship and yamachii
Rating: pg
Notes: for Tarryn because it’s yamachii. This story is fictional, partially inspired by yamajima’s insistence on having been twins in a previous life.
It was a lifetime ago when these three souls were bonded together, a brother, his friend and a sister.
Twins in their day were rare and not often consider blessed, Akiko was the eldest but Kaoru was the more mature. He was very considerate of his sister and when they were younger was often found behind her curtains and they would play together. As the brother grew older he befriends a younger friend named Naoki, a fine dancer. Kaoru was born with a great musical talent and they often played duets that brought a tear to the hardest heart.
The three became great friends, Kaoru would often write poetry and Akiko would draw for him. Kaoru was the better artist but he would often nudge her to be more accomplished, she was quite talented with colors and often chose her brother’s clothes well. She would have robes made for Naoki as well and sent as gifts.
When Akiko was old enough Naoki petitioned her father for her, Kaoru spoke well of him. Naoki was of good family; his mother was a talented musician and his father a dancer who often danced before the previous emperors. Naoki was only a guard’s captain and he was young for it but his mother had maternal ties to the former Chancellor. Akiko was soon married to Naoki.
There was a deep connection between them; Kaoru who was no longer allowed behind his sister’s curtains often remarked they must have had a bond from a former life. He also felt a bond with her but of a different sort, they had shared the same womb and Akiko still depended on him in some ways. He bought his sister many beautiful things and watched from afar the tender way his friend treated his sister. They were often teased about being too close.
One day, Akiko became ill…they learned she would soon have a child. Kaoru worried, his sister had never been very strong; Naoki however was pleased. He loved Akiko so completely that for her to be having his child was a great gift. He wanted all of his children to be hers…
Sadly, the bond between them was not to last, Akiko gave birth to a son but she did not last the night. Her husband and brother were sick with grief. Naoki pinned for her and it weakened him. He fell into such a decline that not even his son could rouse him. Soon Kaoru was alone; the child their only heir and his only treasure. A token of those he loved so much. He was not fated to live long either, he barely lived to see his sister’s first grandchild before leaving this world. His own grief at the losses that happened so close together had kept him from taking a wife…
