Today is gorgeous, in the mid-80's, and the first weekend I've had in a while where I didn't have something already planned. So, having updated and charged my iPod, filled my water bottles, and in theory prepared myself for extensive physical effort, I set out earlier this afternoon (12:30?) to ride my bike from North Andover to Salem (by way of ( Read more... )

It was fun, though I clearly need to hydrate myself more during the rides. And sunscreen. Oy. Sunscreen, DEFINITELY.

I'm considering trying Ragbrai this year, too, ever since roughandtumble told me about it last night.

Always sunscreen. ALWAYS. And a hat that covers the back of one's neck. I sail and people think I'm crazy to be wearing long sleeves and pants even in the hottest weather, but better to dunk oneself while getting into the boat (I sail dinghies so we launch off the beach anyway) and stay cool that way and have the protection of a layer of clothing than depend on meagre sunscreen...actually you can even burn through a cotton tshirt.

That Ragbrai (apart from being a fun name!) does look like it'd be fun! A great thing to ride across a state with a huge group of people. And it's being opened by the BNL! I presume Iowa's pretty flat.

Your trip to the Grand Canyon and environs is coming up soon though, right? STILL JEALOUS. I'll look forward to hearing about it.

Yup, the Southwest trip is a mere two weeks or so away now. : )

I'm probably not going to do the full hike down into the Grand Canyon, but I am going to camp there for at least an afternoon and a night. See the sunrise, get on the road midmorning, that sort of thing. I'll have to make sure to take my pocketwatch, since I suspect that my cell phone (which I usually rely on for telling time) might not get reception out there.
