Well, I'm relieved that you had people you could count on to bail you out. And you should look at the bright side. You did bump into caring strangers who tried to be helpful. And that should restore your faith that there are still people who will stop and offer assistance to a newcomer in their midst.
OTOH (and this is from the perspective of someone who will never travel in such a down-and-dirty personal fashion), you may have bitten off more than you could chew ... what with your destination and time frame. So you learned a valuable lesson. Even so, I would have been very surprised to see you in any condition to return to work in a week's time after all the physical exertion. You would have needed a vacation from the vacation.
So, now you can enjoy slumming and slothing. And that gets a big thumb's up from me. Not to mention an epsom salts bath, cushion for your tush, and a few drinks.
Congrats for trying anyway. You nut! Affectionate hugs, H.
*grin* Yah, possibly. The thing is... I actually feel fairly confident that, putting aside the breakdown, I could have stuck to something near my original schedule. It's 42 miles or so from Wareham to Providence, just 12 or so miles further than North Andover to Boston. And once I'd arrived on Long Island, my biking schedule was much much less long-distance. (A mere 20 or 30 or at most 40 miles in a day, which on a bike is nothing.)
Yah, thank goodness for good Samaritans. Although I -am- a bit put out at all the SUVs and pickups and trailer-towing Fords that went hustling past me on both roads when I was on foot dragging a flat tire. *eyeroll* : )
I'll have you, I commend you for sticking through this. I would've given up in a gale of tears about 1/4 of the way through this mess.
Of course, I can assure you that no campground would turn me away, family or not. Waterworks + angry and feisty woman = I WILL GET MY WAY OR YOU WILL SUFFER.
