I thought this was a quite sweet interview looking at how far Darren has come since graduating uni.
But I'm sorry I laughed for a century at this: 'Which brings us to the bombshell of this story-Darren Criss is not gay.' Erm LOL yeah we know!
Since when was it new news that Darren is straight *snort* He's been saying this for years, and has had a few photoshoots of him surrounded by women, not to mention Mia! Only delusional tinhatters think he's gay or bi or whatever label they want to throw at him to make him fit into their fantasy version of him.
Though the photo of the girls touching him is freaking me out as there are more hands than people 0.o
I mainly only posted this though for the first photo :P One of my new favourites of him!
Several people, not only tinhats, think Darren is lately being heavily marketed as a dreamboat idol singer type of guy. Hence the focus on saying he´s not gay.
Honestly I think it´s part true. His record label comissioned songs for his tour and wants him to have an image that will appeal to a bigger crowd of fangirls, not only Glee or Starkid fans. That happens with all pop singers. Maybe it´s a necessary evil in this stage of Darren´s career. Maybe later, when he has more experience and several solo song hits under his belt, he could go independent or negotiate how he wants his image to be.
I think Darren's marketing the wrong kind of people. Maybe it's because in hindsight alot of his fans are actually 18+ no matter how many "14 year old fangirls" stereotypes like to be attached to him. But I do think he should be aiming at older people especially if he wants to continue acting
( ... )
I think Darren's marketing the wrong kind of people.
Yeah, me too. But I think it´s not him, but his record label/management.
However I don't see the big deal in him saying he's straight in 2 RECENT interviews
I see it as part of the marketing thing. Like his management wants his image to be very heterosexual, it wants to wipe every single doubt he might be gay or bi because that´s bad for business. And since Darren is a big supporter of the gay community, and plays a gay character he´s proud of, that empahis on saying he´s straight sounds wrong to some people.
Darren has said before that he doesn't agree with the idea that it should be hard for him as a straight guy to play gay. It's mainly the media turning it.
I don't think some people realize that PR doesn't write articles or even dictate what goes in them. They can make requests, sure, but the writer has absolutely no requirement to listen to them. Most likely, the writer was surprised that he was straight or they knew their audience. I went to San Francisco a few months ago, and San Francisco Magazine is what ends up in every hotel room and waiting room in San Francisco, which is pretty famous for it's gay community. They put what they thought would grab people's attention up in the headline and didn't mention it until the end. The only marketing it does is for the magazine itself. It gets readers to read the whole article.
Yeah, as a native of the bay area, I can tell you with confidence, this magazine is the equivalent of "coffee table book" it's for tourists who don't know much about the city, and want a cliffnotes version of what to expect.
When I first read the article yesterday, I was a bit baffled by the "he's actually straight" thing, because I don't remember reading anything like that since his early interviews after landing the role of Blaine. Rereading a few times, you can tell the interviewer took a lot of what was said and sliced it together to make a shiny "look at me!" story.
Especially the part about him being "embarrassed" by his Starkid play. No, he's proud of it, but he was obviously shy/starstruck and didn't want Dan to think he was insulting him. And yeah, we know he's capable of more polished work, look at the plays he's participated in since then! (sorry about that rant, I've been on tumblr reading wank for too long)
TL;DR, hardly anyone who's a native of SF or the area reads this. It's for tourists.
(strangled sound) San Francisco magazine, you do your city a disservice, and one of your proudest sons one too, by trying to reduce it to "It's okay to perve over him girls, he's not gay for real!" so so much awkward in the pigeonholing and the cut-chop of what was probably a pleasant interview. There's been backlash about how he seems to belittle AVPM, but it's just that Daniel Radcliffe would probably be the last person to bring up an irreverent parody of the HP franchise to. DC didn't even take a picture when he and Daniel first met to talk about the H2$ role, because it was very much an actor-to-actor thing and not "Hyuk-hyuk, you were Harry and I was too, and now look at me!" I just wish they'd sent someone who had done enough background work to know about the Trevor Project and how hard he's worked so that the "straight actor vs. gay role" would be a non sequitur.
