What exactly is a hipster?

I'm pretty sure it goes under a different name in Sweden, which is why I am asking.

It's kind of gotten overly used as a shorthand for "people who irritate me just by existing" which is annoying since actual hipsters found in the wild truly are some of the most obnoxious people ever. I live in New York City, which has a huge influx of hipsters and I make several journeys into Williamsburg (Brooklyn) where hipsters tend to migrate. (Although they're trying to move up into the Bronx, good luck with that.)

This site is the original place to see hipster in action: Look at That Fucking Hipster. Probably not safe for work depending on the hipster's activities ( ... )

I agree. I like Chuck a lot, but he's a total hipster, as are his fellow bandmates. And I like the Freelance Whales.

Darren dresses like a hipster but he's too much of a freaking dork to be a hipster.
