Memory
Kurogane did not remember anything after he took up his father’s sword.
It was only blank, black, blissful nothingness.
No memory of cold rage, no memory of blinding pain. No memory of his first kill. Or the second, or the hundredth.
Nothing.
He supposed he had been too young, too traumatized, too out of his own mind to remember.
The first thing he did remember was pain in his left hand. He remembered knowing it was pain even though he did not quite feel it.
He did remember clutching his mother’s dead body and his dead father’s sword. He did remember being surrounded by a slaughter that must have been caused by his own hand; he did remember not caring.
He remembered crying, shaking, sobbing, as if he would never stop. He remembered his tears mixing with the blood on his hands.
He did not remember avenging his father’s death.
Tomoyo had told him it was a blessing.
Now, as Kurogane stood on the rooftop across from a man with a chilling smile and a strange blank eye, Kurogane knew he would remember.
This time, he would remember avenging the deaths of those he had not been able to protect.
