Jonghyun should have believed Taemin when he said that he was looking for him.
It was pouring rain when they saw each other again. Their eyes met over the crowds and from across the vast expanse of the street. For a moment, a split second pause, Jonghyun thought he was seeing things. When that split second was over, when time began moving again, Jonghyun realized that he wasn’t seeing things, that he wasn’t delusional. He really was seeing Choi-fucking-Minho and Jonghyun did something that his best friend in the world would tease him about for the rest of his life.
He turned tail and bolted like the coward he felt he was.
He didn’t look back to see if he was following him or not. His chest tightened and Jonghyun ducked his head, his feet slapping against wet pavement as he tore down the street and through the crowds. His black hoodie was soaked from the rain and his dyed hair flopped into his eyes in thick, wet strands. His shoes squeaked when he turned abruptly around a corner and Jonghyun yelped when his footing slid from him and he was sent careening into a pair of young women.
He gasped in surprise; head lashing up and Jonghyun hastily mumbled an apology to them before he glanced over his shoulder just as Minho’s voice rang out in his deep baritone.
“Hyung!” and Jonghyun winced because fuck! Minho got a lot faster.
“I’m sorry,” and Jonghyun pushed himself to his feet, his hand clawing at the closest wall. The young women looked almost worried and tried to help him. The moment he was standing again, he shot past them, leaping easily over a few people before he rushed across the street and into an alley.
He continued running, his hair whipping at his face and he grabbed the hanging end of an escape ladder before heaving himself up. Jonghyun, for the first time in almost 3 years, felt fear, true fear sink into his gut and he dashed across the slightly rickety fire escape before he leapt onto the brick wall that separated two alleys.
He didn’t want to come face to face with someone who walked from him.
His thin form flipped over the landing and he hurried on, looking back for just one second. Jonghyun’s breath hitched when he felt arms curl around him and the all too familiar scent that was him enveloped his senses.
“Hyung,” was the low mumble at his ears and that familiar sense of pain, starting deep within his chest, exploded into being. Jonghyun struggled.
His knee came up, ramming hard into his sternum and Jonghyun pretended that the ragged gasp of pain ringing at his ears did nothing to his heart, stepping back and away from the man now doubling over, an arm slung across his stomach. Jonghyun panted, his body trying to return oxygen to his deprived lungs and backed up to create room between him and Choi Minho. Dark eyes looked up at him and Jonghyun stifled a whimper, the smaller man stepping back.
3 years. It had been 3 fucking years since they last saw each other and Jonghyun felt as if his heart was breaking all over again. Only the chill of the rain and the sting of memories allowed Jonghyun to keep his sanity, keeping him from breaking down right then and there.
“Jonghyun-hyung,” his eyes closed, hating how hearing his own name leave his lips was making his legs go weak. He heard the other moving and he held up a hand, his own voice cracking as he ordered,
“Don’t come any closer,”
“Jonghyun-hyung,” was the plea and Jonghyun looked away from those dark eyes that made his stomach clench with so much guilt and grief that he felt as if he was going to puke. Choi Minho felt as if he was physically struck. His heart lurched painfully in his chest and Minho bit the inside of his cheek to stop from crying out. Jonghyun inhaled shakily and for a moment, they just stood there, watching each other.
“What do you want from me?” Jonghyun’s voice was a mere whisper, his uncertainty and pain ringing clearly in his one question. Minho tried to step forward and Jonghyun flinched. Minho stilled. When Minho didn’t answer, Jonghyun laughed bitterly, a sound that tore straight at Minho’s heartstrings. “Why did you send Taemin to look for me? Why did you send Taemin to tell me-“ Jonghyun choked and he brought a hand to his lips, to muffle his sobs and Minho felt like he was going to be ill when he saw the glistening of tears in the other’s beautiful, beautiful eyes. Jonghyun inhaled shakily and he smiled brokenly at Minho. “Did you know that I was almost over you?”
“Jonghyun, I-“ and Jonghyun shrilled at him before he could finish.
“I was almost over you! 3 years! It’s been 3 fucking years and just when I’m almost over you, you come fucking prancing back into my life by telling my best friend to come and find me? To tell me that I’m still first in your heart?” Jonghyun couldn't see clearly, tears pouring down his cheeks and his head ducked. It was still raining and even if the drops masked his own tears, Jonghyun didn’t want Minho to see him like this. Because it meant he was accepting that he was weak in front of the other, it meant that he was very affected by his words.
Jonghyun hiccupped and a finger hooked gently at his chin, lifting his head. Jonghyun adverted his gaze; he didn’t want to see the emotions in the other’s eyes. A light touch at his cheek, the brushing of a thumb brushing away his tears made him swallow an ugly sound and before he knew it, he buried his head into the soaked jacket of the man standing across from him and sobbed. Minho just lightly wrapped his arms around him and held him.
“I was getting over you,” and Jonghyun banged his fist into the other’s chest. “I was just starting to forget how much I fucking loved you,”
“You’re very cruel to me too you know,” Minho in turned responded softly. “You occupy my head so fucking much that I’d be lucky to think of something else, instead of how much I love you. And it hurts when I realize that I can’t feel you at my side anymore because you’re not there,”
Jonghyun let out a strange sounding laugh, somewhere between a sob and a chuckle. Minho just held him closer, his chin resting on the crown of the smaller man’s head.
“Where do we stand Minho-ah? I mean you’re about to be married and-“ Minho pulled away so abruptly that Jonghyun was stunned momentarily. He searched the older man’s face and he asked, “Who told you that?”
“Sulli called me and said that you wanted me to be your best man,” Jonghyun blinked and Minho hissed. “I-I heard you over the phone during that call,”
“Sulli-ah was talking about Taemin-ah,” and now it was Jonghyun’s turn to be confused. “She and Taemin have a date settled for their wedding. It’s next week,” Jonghyun blinked. “They’ve been together since before you left. Didn’t Taemin tell you?”
“I was actually more annoyed by the fact that you sent me on an errand to find my best friend that I forgot to tell him I was getting married,” the two of them sprang apart at the voice and they turned to see a handsome young man standing at the entrance to the alley. He smirked lopsidedly. “Sulli sends her love for the both of you by the way. She’s busy with wedding details and sent me to pick up her stupid brother and my stupid friend,”
“Did she plan this entire thing?” Taemin just smirked at them.
“She’s the brightest mind of her generation hyung,”
mmkay. i don't really know where this came from. Only that I wanted to write a Jongho with a splash of Taeli. I'll probably come up with an entire back story if people ask for it but for the moment, I don't think so. *i've got so many things to work on. lol*
