We've been having this ongoing discussion with Katrina, who feels slighted about me posting Bramble's artwork "all the time", but not hers. The thing is that she's now mostly drawing pre-defined Japanese style fanart, and I don't think big heads and huge eyes with sparkles are that interesting, at least not to grown-ups. As a compromise, Katrina ( Read more... )

Sumo Paint seems to be something that I too should have a closer look at: it seems to have a nice set of features for other than just doodling, even layers.

It's kinda cute: she squeals whenever she gets a new comment (and, ooooh, some of them are from FOREIGNERS!) for her Sumo drawings :))) (No worries, we've trained her well, besides her country, there isn't any other information about her, and even her email isn't a proper address, but a Mailinator "account")

Then it will be okay if we comment then? The penguins really liked several of her works!

Oh, she cherishes each and every comment like the biggest treasure in the world! She's got surprisingly many of them, a few on the gallery itself and more on each individual piece. And, oooooh, once she got in the top X rated images list on the entire site!

Those Sumo Paint patterns are really pretty, like a collection of stained-glass windows.

The difference between her freehand drawings and manga style is stunning. She's not tracing, I assume? The manga look like they could be done by an adult, while the items done from her own imagination are clearly done by a kid. For all that, I prefer the kid pictures, to see what her own imagination comes up with. :D That camper is particularly fantastic, and I like the fish comic, too.

I too prefer her "own" pictures, the manga style is not interesting at all. She didn't trace these, but what she does is that she studies some (manga) picture, copies it a million times to be able to do the exact same thing, and then she recycles bits and pieces of the original in her own drawings. The crown for instance is something that she trained for for weeks (why!??!!!) and now she can draw it with her eyes closed. Studying existing drawings and pictures is not necessarily bad, but in her case it clearly kills her own creativity. I hope she will grow out of this "this is how it MUST be drawn" phase, and that she will start to figure out what her OWN style is.

*sigh*

(Your icon makes me smile every time I see it :D It looks like Mä Mä, which is close enough to "Mää Mää", which is what Finnish sheep say :D)

(What does it mean?)

Ma(ma) with the first tone (flat, higher pitch) means ... Mama. As in, Mother. :D

Ma with the third tone (dipping down and back up again) means horse, however. And the character for Mom is essentially "female horse". Yay?

I always get so happy when I see you're posting kiddie art, and even happier when I see the pics :) Can't figure out a favourite, but I think in Helsinki, traffic signs warning of grumpy people in general will come in handy.

:D I shouldn't encourage her with her textbook doodling habit, but I can't but crow with joy whenever I see she has drawn something that's NOT manga (or Super Mario *groan*)

Oh, these are great! I particularly like the fish comic - the the facial expressions!

The poor fish used to have manga eyes, until she changed them to (IMO) far better ordinary eyes. Manga style gives way too many ready-made solutions for facial expressions that aren't even that good for expressing the feeling *sigh*

(Thanks!!)
