How to make a Highlight For Spoilers block

Mar 02, 2011 23:09

A discussion came up on SH911 regarding tags and warnings for fanfiction.  I mentioned that I use headers for my stories, and if I feel something gives too much away, I use a "highlight for spoilers" block.  This is how to make one, if you would like to do it yourself and don't know how:

The basic idea is, make the font color and background color the same, so that it is unreadable unless you highlight the text to show it up.

Here is an example--

Title: Are You Lonesome Tonight?
Series: The Lovelorn Stories
Author: kuonji
Fandom: Starsky & Hutch
Characters: *highlight for spoilers: Louise the Guinea Pig, various
Pairings: *highlight for spoilers: Louise/Starsky (unrequited)
Category: character study, angst, *highlight for spoilers: animal!fic
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: bdsm, *highlight for spoilers: bestiality
Words: ~25,000
Summary: She knew she had no hope, but she couldn't help dreaming...

Here is how to do it--

1. On the Post an Entry (or Edit Entry) page, look at the text box where you type the contents of your post. There should be two tabs at the top right labelled "Rich Text" and "HTML". Livejournal defaults to the "Rich Text" tab. Click on the "HTML" tab.

2. Now you will see your post in html code. It takes a little getting used to, but be patient and wade through the text and the weird code. If you're bewildered, you can use ctrl+F to search on the page for the specific place where you want your "highlight for spoilers" block to be.

3. Copy the following code where you want it:
*highlight for spoilers: your text here

4. Go back to the "Rich Text" tab. You should see that the "your text here" is not visible unless you highlight it with your mouse cursor. Done!

Hint: Do remember to write "*highlight for spoilers:", or else your readers will be looking at a blank and think you just forgot to write anything there. ;)

Hope this helps.  Comment or PM me with any questions.  I would appreciate a thank you and a link here if you do use this.  Thanks!
