Avengers - I've hit critical mass... or something

Jun 04, 2012 23:09

Well, that settles it. I've officially scanned past one too many fics on AO3 where Steve is a modern day moron. The slapstick-technology brush has been applied too broadly. It was this kind of uneven representation in fanon that spurred me into writing my first Avengers fic, and now it seems time to take up the shield and finish off that little ( Read more... )

To be fair to Steve, the sheer mass of things he has to catch up on is sort of mindboggling. I'm not sure what it was like for comics!Steve, given comic-book time and the fact that I think he was initially unfrozen in the 1960s there, but movie-verse Steve has a flat 70 years of development that he needs to adapt to now. Not helped by the fact that he's interacting with Tony Stark, who in certain areas (JARVIS, holy shit, JARVIS) is actually around about another 70 years ahead of us, never mind Steve.

I think, given the early days that are in it, that Steve is probably dealing with it right now as though it were battlefield conditions: doesn't matter what the hell you think should be going on, doesn't matter what way you think things should be working, you deal with things as they act on the ground, right here, right now. If then. If you push this button, then this technology/that person does that. *shrugs* He can start building up a database to actually understand things as he goes, but that ... just for sheer mass of information he ( ... )

Thank you! I'm looking forward to turning my hand to this particular problem again. I agree with you that the subject is very rich with opportunity for an in-depth character study, and when written with respect and an even hand there's actually quite a bit of room for humor, too. What I object to is making Steve the butt of every joke of that sort. It's not representational of the character, IMO.

I'm also really looking forward to seeing what you write when you feel like you're ready. Let me know when you post!

I feel your pain. The biggest reason I started posting fanfiction was because I couldn't stand all the ur doing it wrong that was running through my head (in Voyager fanfiction, at the time). lol

I love Avengers. Been devouring the fic like mad; will be thrilled to see you writing for it.

That's exactly what spurred me on, too. My first fic was in The Sentinel (ah, those long-ago days) and it was all about being unable to find the story that I wanted to read, and then realizing that I'd have to be the one to write it.

I've got the first two little stories already posted to AO3, and I'll be posting here with a link when the third part has finished percolating in my brain. Thanks for the support, it means a ton to me. :)

Hi there chica! Oh god, what would I recommend? Um, start with some awesome long stories by gyzym on A03. I always enjoy CrimsonQuills, and more recently scifigrl47 has been publishing some fun, sexy, absorbing fics. All on A03.

What are some of your favs?

I'm so glad you're writing more! Lurker here, I loved both A Man and His Shield (especially the Commando's other coping mechanisms, and the humming as an injury check!) and Waiting for the Right Partner.
I am especially in favor of not-an-idiot Steve. He has a mind boggling amount of social, technological, and physical changes to adapt to, but seeing him succeed at adjusting to the modern world is a big part of his appeal to me.
