Harry Potter 6 & Some Other Ramblings

Jul 19, 2009 11:55

Finally saw Harry Potter 6 Friday night.
Can I say I was surprised by how much Rupert Grint's acting has improved since the early days?
ALSO surprising - the actress who plays Lavender Brown (Jessie Cave) was hysterical - she really nailed the character.

cutting if you find anything spoiler-y )

real life, music, harry potter

yeah, i just reread the book before seeing the movie, and i absolutely love dumbledore in the books, but gambon didn't translate that certain quirkiness he has too well to the screen. :|

Dumbledore has that wonderful mix of whimsey, intelligence, and power in the books.

I think when Gambon first took over the role, he probably intentionally tried to play it a bit different than Richard Harris. But, yeah. Meh.

He's missing the kindness and love towards Harry that we need, in order to give a crap about his character other than that he's the Headmaster.

That might be it.

You know what else I think is missing, even in the books? We're always told that Dumbledore is the greatest wizard, but we don't get one really spectacular scene of his true power.

It's been a while since I've read 'The Half-Blood Prince', and my copy of it is, at the moment, 850 miles away from me. But... I don't know, did it seem to you that there were a few things out of order? I thought the book began with the Bellatrix/Narcissa/Snape scene.

You're correct - the book DOES begin with the Bellatrix/Narcissa/Snape scene. That girl Harry's hitting on in the beginning? Just thrown into the film for fun.

I get some of the rearranging of stuff for the flow of the film, but still sometimes throws you off a bit, doesn't it?

The opening scene left me scratching my head. Would Harry seriously go waving his 'Daily Prophet' about under muggles' noses? Then I thought 'is that Thandie Newton - wait, it can't be - she's too young!'

What did you think of the shoelace bit? Between Ginny and Harry? Do you reckon the director decided to chuck in a Mary Magdalen bit to further the sense of Messiah? I thought it was a bit much; had she been my daughter, I'd have taken her aside and explained to her that sub-servience really isn't a desireable behaviour.

Ugh. I thought that scene was entirely awkward.

In the books, Ginny always comes across as strong + independent.
