things to keep in the car/cooler (get a cooler): olivetree April 1 2010, 16:15:24 UTC
1. refillable bottles full of water (2/person/day)
2. cheese sticks
3. yogurt
4. fresh, easible edible fruit: berries, tangerines, apples, etc
5. when possible, buy subs at supermerkets: cheaper and just as tasty.
6. protein bars
7. i'm a big fan of water flavorant powders-- better than soda and just as sweet

books oh god books

get noise-cancelling headphones, if you don't have them already.
always know where your towel is (no lie).

pack a good hoodie or rain coat for the PNW. seriously. (fuck an umbrella)

eat when you can (snacks run out and you can't restock all the time)

piss when you can (even if you don't have to)

always have a camera with you, even if it's just your phone.

remember that this is an adventure-- one you're getting paid to go on, no less! have fun with it!

(portable games, if your car-mates are into it)

(guess who?! i'm sayin')

(i've been on a lot of long roadtrips, can you tell?)

If you are driving across country using I90, in SD there is a Park with a drive loop that is really cool. It may not be open due to weather.

For the drive itself, if you are driving something to listen to (Cd's,recorded books) as there are spots that get no radio reception. Otherwise I agree with all of olivetree's suggestions. Oh and don't forgot to watch your speed when you are getting off the highway, lots of small town cops are really strict about speed and love to get out of state drivers.

What Beca said!
I'd add to load up your ipod, or bring lots of cds. Audiobooks are good too!

(Good God LiveJournal is loading slowly!)
The power of CopperBadge compels me! Only 5 days? I hope you have someone along to help drive. Anyway, scenic drive: check out (Goddammit! LJ, you slow slig!) (Grrrr! slow lj is slow) (trying again to reach my blog, this time in a new tab) (now waiting for calendar view) (waiting for 2009, 2008) (Oh! LJ speeded up!) my blog starting here: http://ungulata.livejournal.com/74729.html and keep hitting the "next entry" button. What you will see is fab landscape starting at about Mnt Rushmore and heading west. I took secondary highways that were recommended to me and they were _so_ worth it. I posted those pictures well after the trip, after I got a Flickr account. While I was on the trip I posted here, listing highways and stops: http://ungulata.livejournal.com/58386.html (again hit next to keep going).

Once you get to Seattle there are a zillion 'must-see' places off the beaten track, not least the home base of Archie McPhee. I have numerous other recs for local landmarks of the counter-culture - just ask! :)

En route, I strongly urge you swing by Maryhill, on the Columbia River about half-way across Washington. There's a weird Stonehenge life-sized replica (cast cement - looks like those candles people used to make in milk cartons!) and one of the strangest museums you'll ever see, including memorabilia from Queen Marie of Rumania, chess sets, and Native American basketry.
