What is the character supposed to be, or the spoon?
The character is named Vivi, hailing from Final Fantasy 9. He isn't aware of it until later in the game, but he's a construct made from magical essence. He's based on the Black Mage character type that has been around since the series' inception. (Vivi is my fav FF character out of all the games, BTW.)
The giant wooden spoon happens to be an oak staff with a curly head. There are a variety of staffs or rods available for the mage class in the game, not all of them being so... uh, 'spoony'.
