"Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force
Under its post-war constitution, Japan is not allowed a navy, army or air force, only Self Defence Forces."

about a year ago i read about the changes Japan was making with it's military, phasing out the "Self Defence Forces" for a more standard National Military.

Here's an article about the previous Prime Minister's legislation attempts to add a larger scope of Japan's Military use overseas. granted the article is a year old but figured you might be interested.

the IHT is one of the papers that some of the airlines offer to english readers. i think i might have seen that story in print.

*note* the connection between the 2 (IHT and monocle)
i wouldn't be surprised if they were colleagues.
the article on the JapanSDF was in the launch issue.
quite a good story too actually!
:-)

oh, and the first one also had a great story on china and it's interests in africa and how, unlike the US, they are unburdened with as many moral qualms as the US and are free to help/invest as much as they'd like. and they invest quite a lot!

I concur, this magazine rocks - good mix of techie, international biz trends and other goodies (not so into the fashion bits, but they're amusing). Watch out if you subscribe with a US credit card, they'll add on fees for the exchange rate and some other charge - bastards.
