Catching up

Life has been the usual whirlwind lately, but good stuff really.  Work has been crazy busy but good.  I love working for Chris again - he's pretty much the best boss ever.  Feeling like someone appreciates what I do and working for someone who has my back is an amazing thing and not something I have been able to experience often.

O, I am very familiar with our friends at FAFSA. The loans I had to take out were to cover what the grants and scholarships and loans the kids took out did not cover. A fairly sizable amount of money when you are doing 2 at a time.

I hate the FAFSA paperwork. just saying

It would help a lot if we lived in Vermont. In state tuition is much lower than the out of state cost. But that won't happen for another year or so, which isn't much help now ( ... )

See comment above... we did FAFSA and both of them received a certain amount of money from their respective schools in the form of grants and scholarship money. They also each took out smallish loans of their own. I took out Parents PLUS loans for each of them to cover the rest.

They will of course work over the summers and help to pay back this money, since it is for their education. But right now, the burden is pretty much on me.

The cost of a college education is beyond ridiculous. I don't understand why we, as a nation, don't consider it so important that our children have higher educations that we are willing to make sure that it is affordable. I know this is stressful for you. However, you are doing what is best for them and they are doing you proud!

In the very most sensitive and caring way - why do you have to pay back the student loans? Both your kids will eventually graduate and have jobs. Why can't they take care of the loan balances themselves at that point?

I have to at least begin to pay back the loans. Unlike the loans that the kids take out - on which payments do not begin until 9 months after they graduate - the Parents PLUS loans that I take out require payments immediately. The kids will contribute when and what they can, but until they are working full time the responsibility is mine.
