Five never seemed so big

Raine turned 5 on Friday. It seems like a bigger milestone than some of her other birthdays, probably because of the whole old enough for kindergarten thing, though that also probably didn't spring from the ether. I feel compelled to point out that you can be there for the entire process and still be in the dark about how a child is picking up reading skills. I mean, sure, I see all the nuances of what they can and can't do and get to see it change from day to day (although they can still surprise me sometimes), but why on earth is T able to sound out words now (not yet 5 1/2), but D couldn't really do it until she was 6? I'm willing to accept that some of the math thing is because he's been around so much more close-to-his-level math talk than she was at the same age, but I tried to teach D to sound words out at 5, and it just wasn't there. So much of it, I must conclude, comes down to brain wiring, and none of us get to really watch the neurons connect.

Also, I love the paragraph about the computer game. :)
