As a human, he never sought out a disagreement. He was a gentleman and found those sorts of things were beneath him
Angelus tried to shape him into a killer who enjoyed tormenting his prey before the kill. But that was Angelus’ style.
Even as a vampire he found that distasteful. He did love the rush and crunch of a kill, but only if it was a fair fight.
He needed a challenge. Otherwise it was just boring. Once he found out there was a Slayer, she was perfect for him.
After all, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
