Due to error, actually: Its sibling word, "subtile," came out of a Latinized refashioning ("sub" as the prefix) of the Old French soutil, and people in the 13th century confused "sutel" with "subtile," giving way erroneously to "subtle."

And, yes, A Bug's Life is from Pixar.

Why, why, WHY did all my complaining yesterday about how you don't capitalize the English first-person pronoun have the opposite effect on you? (Not to mention all those missing apostrophes!) Silly hippie...
