So our church has an old gym. It has the usual things you would expect an old gym to have: basketball hoops, an old, cracked, smoothed concrete floor, old bathrooms with showers. It also has some things you wouldn't expect it to have: a stage with loft, and a cafeteria style window that open up to a kitchen. It's sort of out of the way, this gym ( Read more... )

in Ojai, CA several of the local churches take turns every week to serve as homeless shelters throughout the winter... i believe they require t.b. tests to be current, and some sort of preregistration, or proof that people "live" in Ojai, not just showing up from everywhere else.
it seems to work well... maybe you could use that as an example?

Oh, that's a great idea! I'm seriously going to have to start writing these things down and try circulating them around. There are a LOT of churches and homeless outreach type organizations in the area, but I know they prioritize in order: children, women, women with children, families, men. This leaves more than a few men out to fend for themselves on very cold nights. AL isn't exactly a rich state. :-(
