Okay LJ...I'm turning to you for help.

My friend Julie is a photographer who up until now has been dedicated to film cameras. Over New Years, I visited her and we had pretty much the following conversation:

Julie: *looking at college classes for digital photography* I should really consider getting into digital photography, but I don't want to ( Read more... )

My little sister the film student bought a Nikon d7000 in the last year, but spent lots of time doing some comparison shopping with simiilar model Canons....she LOVES her Nikon, and purchased some lenses from the Tokina brand...I seem to remember them being cheaper than the Nikon branded lenses. I know she uses a wide angle lens and some others, but I can't remember what.

As for getting a mac, well, even as a dyed-in-the-wool PC user, I am seriously considering getting a mac once my laptop craps out. My dad and sis were converts after the first day of mac ownership, and now that I have an iPad, I'm pretty sure there's no going back.

Just my 2 cents...I'm sure some other folks will chime in!

I am kinda biased towards Nikon. When I got my Nikon digital SLR (about 6 years ago now) I had waited until a point where DSLR photography was able to be blown up well and not look crappy. So now, the newer cameras are even better. Back in the day though, Nikon always had the best reputation for film SLR cameras, and they have kept that up into digital, but then I also hear Cannon are good too. From my work with professional photographers (as a makeup artist), most tend to head towards Nikon. As for lenses, mine are Nikon brand. I know it is cheaper to get other brands, but the Nikon lenses are where the money is at. Quite frankly the lenses are what make a photograph. If anything, cheap out on the body and spend big on the lenses ( ... )

No idea on cameras but I have a PC laptop and a REALLLLY old mac desktop at home and work on macs all day at the office. Go with a MAC! IF you are going to be doing editing on the go, get a Macbook Air but if you will be doing it at home, I highly recommend a macmini with a good size monitor.
Photoshop is good. There are also some decent photo editing software that is open source... GIMP for Macs and PCs, Paint.net for PCs, That you may want to use to get your feet wet.

Just my 2 cents.
