It has always seemed a foolish notion to me that God would be male. If God is the ultimate perfection, then he would necessarily have all of the good aspects of masculine, feminine, and neutral qualities. That seems to me to be part of the nature of the definition of "God" as an idea.
I have always accepted that people use the masculine pronouns for "him" because to call God "it" seems to remove personality and in English I understand that male is the default pronoun usage in most cases. Neither have I faulted people for calling god "she".
It is a shame to me that there is such a lack in English or many other languages of a gender-neutral personal pronoun, but unfortunately most attempts I have been made aware of trying to create one have seemed sadly dissappointing to my ears, albeit in good intent.
I am glad that someone is bringing this up in a scholarly way, however, and hope that people will listen to him on this issue.
