Until now I used to think all religion was like that. It's nice to know that some religious people are looking for more than just that kind of stuff. I'm still not religious, though :P

You needn't be. And yes, there are plenty of people who despise that kind of claptrap, including innumerable christians who see it as precisely what Jesus preached against. These people are found in nearly every denomination; entire churches have dispensed with all the nonsense and devoted themselves instead to the idea of true charity which demands nothing (certainly not conversion).

You might be interested in dark_christian, and the writings of bradhicks (pay particular attention to entries he's tagged 'religion', and his essay series Christians in the Hand of an Angry God. There is a book out called Can't Hold Back the Spring which delineates some of the progressive catholic movement that mefullofgrace^Toni was talking about, above.
