Damn! I've heard a lot about those Bombay vadapaavs too!!! Nice to know they're nothing but aloo bondas.

Poor thing. :)

Thanks for the sympathy :).

Well, it wasn't as taxing on the tummy as a daabeli (see above); but was not as tasty either.

Give me a regular serving of sambaar-vada any day.

In eighth standard, while reading one of r k narayan's works, we came across this thing called bonda which Raju guide used to get in prison (they were made in rancid oil. At the time it was hilarious that there can be anything as ridiculously named as "bonda". We found this so undigestible, that the most weird guy in the class of 1996 of a certain batch of 122 people would forever be called bonda. For no particular reason. Years later, momo would beat this record for the weirdestly named food. Years later, bonda would turn out to be a harmless aloo chop :(

and coming to over-hyped food items :-

Chats - Kolkatta rules. Especially puchkas. They are definitely not overrated.

cutting at road side hotel - North India. No question. The earthen cups are just the icing.

Hyderabadi biryani - Am vegetarian, so am never gonna sample that. But thanks for he tip, anyways :).

As for calling people bonda, I think that's an age-old feature of schools in South India. Every batch had its own bonda. Never ever, though, have had the pleasure of calling someone a momo!

what is amusing is that someone actually copyrighted that image. ROFL.

Well, it *is* the first photograph I have ever seen of a food item crapping out a big scary green insect.

Copyrighting it does make some sense in that way :D

Agree with you that the vada of vada-pav in Mumbai is not the south indian vada.
But thats what is unique about vada-pav. Whenever someone makes a trip to India, I tell them not to forget to get me half a dozen vada-pavs. I just love 'em , man..Yummy

I just love 'em

As do a lot of people. I guess it's a taste one acquires - I certainly haven't done so this far.
