oh, YES! I just *adore* these two sets, and it's true, they really do hit similar places. There's a lot more--well, 'equality' makes it sound rather healthier than it is, in either case, but definitely a lot more flux and struggle in the doctor-companion relationships. Not least because Five and Eight are two of the less paternal/self-assured authoritarian incarnations, but so much of it is down to Tegan and Anji. When there's another strong personality like that to be frictiony with the Doctor, all sorts of interesting relationship dynamics develop in the threesome.

Basically I agree with everything! And am pleased to have a unifying theory backing up my preferences. :D

Yes! I have become a manifesto guru to a tiny, tiny niche of fandom! I love you guys! *snugs everyon*

And oh, you're precisely right about these two Doctors and their need for some strong-willed female to smack them around/shake them up occasionally. Ten is in dire need of that, maybe not as literally as in "The Runaway Bride" (although I did cheer every single time it happened in that).

I don't think it necessarily *has* to be a female--I think Mickey could've served that role quite interestingly in an alternate season 2, for instance. But for various supertextual reasons, the role pretty much is always female, which I hardly mind, as it is an AWESOME ROLE.

also, reading other comments, WHEN DID THE OTTERFUCKER OCCUR. I NEED TO READ THIS IMMEDIATELY. FOR MY HEALTH.

This is all very true. Mickey would have been aweosme in that capacity, because he could have called BOTH of them on their shit and just been... yeah. Like that. I wish he'd stuck around longer *sigh* bring back Mickey!

And that would be in Lance Parkin's Trading Futures, and lighthearted James Bondian romp. I'm oddly fond of it.
