We lost the campaign. Maine voted (by a slim margin, the slimmest ever) to repeal the law granting gay and lesbian couples the right to marry.

I'm not feeling as upset about it as I feel I "ought" to be--I feel like, had we won, I'd be feeling more emotional right now. I sort of feel like we didn't really lose much, even though we did lose the ( Read more... )

You did great work and can be proud of that. Disappointing outcome, but that in no way changes the energy and trajectory you helped create.

Thanks. :)

I probably feel worst that, when we were done at the polls (I was poll checker for Augusta) and got to the first bar we were meeting up at, the energy was so positive. We were all acting and feeling like we already had it in the bag, and then our collective bubble was burst.

I'm so grateful that I got involved, though. It was a growing experience for me, and I met a lot of great people in the process.

Still, it's only a matter of time. People's minds are opening wider and wider about this, and the more kids reach voting age who've grown up in this more accepting society, the better chance we have. I went to two high schools that had a club known as the Gay-Straight alliance (well, one was called GBSL, but same idea). This was unheard of tens years before that, and things keep progressing exponentially. The close margin is a dead giveaway. I don't think it'll be long before the whole argument seems like a ridiculous antiquity.

Love that you're using a detail from one of my Maurice Sendak homage pieces as your avatar. It's great to find my work decorating pages that really have important things to say.
