I blow at New Year's resolutions. I mean, mine would amount to "write actual fiction instead of just blog posts, exercise every so often, and get better at telling people to fuck off." But I suck at follow-through.

Ooh - I think my mother has bought me a scanner for Christmas. But I don't know if it is one good enough for scanning old photos in, which is what I wanted. Will soon find out as she is bringing stuff today - she has not got the concept of Christmas surprises!

I have never had a proper joib and am SCARED about how to support my baby in future. It is good to remember people retrain and do new jobs in their 30s and 40s. So I can pretend I am a returning-to-work mother rather than a loser!

I can't get over how many jobs require extra degrees these days. I am sure my degree (Classics and Philosophy at Cambridge, a long time ago so all forgotten completely!) could have got me a librarian or archivist post in the past, but these days you need a specific postgraduate qualification.

Scanners are awesome. :D Pretty much any scanner you can get these days will be good enough for photos; unless you're blowing them up really huge then 600 x 600 pixels ought to be fine (and that is still really low-end; most scanners do over a thousand per inch), and if you're just duplicating them at the same size then even 300 x 300 will be good enough for most applications
