I agree with your assessment in it's entirety. (Additionally, I have both the 6th and 7th books if you want to borrow them.)
As ever, Alan Rickman was excellent as Snape, and I liked Dumbledore, but felt he lacked some of the... I don't know, activity he had in the book. Unlike the other Potter movies, I felt like they balanced the relationships well, even doing justice to H/G (and not making me choke on it like the long scenes between Cho and harry).
In the end, when Ray and I were discussing the movie, I said it felt like a visual accompaniment to the book. It was well done and I love the visual quality and style (OMGHOGWARTS).

That said, we both enjoyed the movie a great deal, and even more the second time we saw it.
also, I just finished reading the 7th book again, and reminded once more how much I love that series.
