Is It Too Early to Get Excited for Neverwhere the Movie?

I read Neverwhere on Christmas break from college.  I hadn't been reading any fantasy or science fiction, really, and was blown away by the idea of an alternate world existing in the London subways.  It just felt so wonderfully escapist.   I was also shocked by the juxtaposition of humor and horror.  It was the first thing of Gaiman's that I read, ( Read more... )

After seeing the miniseries, I'm not sure I want to see what they'll have to do with it to condense it down to 2 hours.

That could be messy. The miniseries format probably would have been better.

I also hope they do a better job with the Beast, than did the BBC miniseries.

So long as they don't have a BBC budget, their Beast should be much better.

What beast? Oh, wait. I remember it now -- the Great Cow of London Below.

It will be better than the original series. Except the Marquis might not be quite as awesome, since they'll most likely be getting a different actor. Although I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised there too.

The Angel Islington can only be better ;)

Yeah, I agree. I'm not a big fan of the series (I saw it after I'd read Neverwhere at least twice). The budget for a feature film can only improve it in that sense.

Oh, God. Islington was terrible. The Marquis I thought was pretty spot-on although if they went with a different actor, I wouldn't be heart-broken. Richard and Door were satisfactory, although I'll always remember being amused when Door screamed at Islignton after sending him to hell or wherever. She screamed quite a long monolgue at him :)

The last time I heard about a movie version of Neverwhere, the studio execs wanted to set the story in NYC. (Pause to let how utterly wrong that is sink in.) However, if they're using Neil's script as the basis, then surely they're setting it somewhere sensible, like London.

Neverwhere with an actual budget could be quite cool...

Ugh, that would suck. Although I know he played with the idea of other "below worlds" by referencing the White Albino Aligator of NYC or something. I wouldn't mind seeing that *if* it was in other books he wrote but NOT if it was the movie version of Neverwhere.

There's a very big part of me that still hopes Neil actually writes the sequel to Neverwhere one day. I know he's got some kind of idea for it, but with since he's more than likely going to be directing the Death movie after he finishes writing the Graveyard Book, I doubt we'll see it anytime soon.

Wow. I thought I still had a pretty good idea of what that book was about, but after reading everybody's comments, I see that almost all of it has drained out the bottom of my brain. (Into... my neck. I guess. It's probably pooled in my clavicle by now.)

And Neil's directing the Death movie? The Death movie's still happening? Eee, that's wonderful! (...I hope that's wonderful. Has he ever directed before? Eh, it doesn't matter. He's good at everything.)

Yeah, he's back on the Death movie. He found a friend in Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) who is going to be producing it. He has directed one other movie, "A Short Film on John Bolton." I cautiously recommend it, although if you do watch it, make sure it's with a bunch of friends after you've all had plenty to drink (and still have more left)!
