Stranger Than Fiction? for Korda and The Littlest Immortal

His features showed signs of aggravation as he sat down to send Korda a secure email. He'd have called but didn't want any of his current ill temper oozing out while talking. His plan to crash his brother's wedding had been pushed aside by something more pressing. He could wait and deal with that when time allowed. Right now he had other things ( Read more... )

That evening Kronos arrived at the front gate with a small suitcase and pet carrier. The security was aware of his coming and escorted him in after letting Korda know.

He'd never been here and was impressed by the beauty of the estate even in the growing darkness of evening. They started up the long road that led to the main house.

She leaned forward, hands on her knees. "Thank you for the sandwich little monkey but it is for you to eat." She nodded at him. "You must be hungry."

After she straightened up, her gaze traveled from André to Kronos. It was beginning to feel like one of André's business meetings in here and she didn't care for that at all. She sat down and added a teaspoon of sugar to her tea.

She chuckled at the little monkey when he mimicked her actions and took a seat opposite her. Thank goodness there were only three teacups or he might pick up one of those, too!

He took a baby bottle out of his carry-on bag and placed it next to Clyde. "There ya go, buddy. Something to wash that sandwich down with."

"We should get down to business now," he said as he put a couple of tea sandwiches and pieces of fruit on a small plate. He finished one and then began to speak.

"Why I'm here." He directed his gaze at Cee and then switched it over to Korda. "Watchers."

He bit into another sandwich. He still had Korda's attention but it looked like the Littlest Immortal's attention was beginning to waver.

So this was why! He sipped his tea and deliberated whether this should continue privately between he and Kronos. He hadn't known the exact cause until that moment. He made a judgment call and decided to keep her involved in the conversation. She knew about the organization and was schooled in their ways. If the discussion went in any direction that was unsuited for her, then he would take action.

"This is why you have come, now?" His finger tapped the desktop and his gaze fixed headily on the other man. "Particularly, this is related to?" Out of the corner of his eye he saw Cee petting the monkey. He cleared his throat.

Her head snapped up guiltily at the sound. She looked over at André. Folding her hands in her lap, she focused on the conversation.

Clyde was unhappy that the petting stopped and he moved over to the lady and patted her hand.

"That's my boy," he said with a chuckle.

"Watchers. Like I was saying. It seems that they're doing more lately than just watching." He raised an eyebrow hoping the other man would get his meaning. "I was followed. I was with a friend and we ended up being tailed. And before you start thinking it was me, by the time I got to them, they were dead."

"This person following you was one of us and the killer or killers were…" He just could see the answer in Kronos' eyes. The logical conclusion - the awful conclusion. The reports he'd gotten were confirmed in his mind now without doubt. The cause was not entirely a mystery ,but there were still unknowns.

Korda sat on the edge of the desk somewhat stunned. "Watchers? Why kill that which they cherish?" He got up and paced. Then peered steadfastly at Cee before his questioning gaze fell to Kronos. "This complicates matters."

She placed her tea cup on the table and spoke slowly. "We don't have Watchers."

Her statement was truth and he nodded at it. He had no Watchers since his return. And she had never had one. But it's not the kind of information he would share with anyone. "We currently do not. And I plan on keeping it that way. However…" He got up and poured more tea for everyone. As he neared Cee, Clyde hissed at him and showed his teeth. "Do you think this will burn itself out sooner… or later?" he asked Kronos. He then reached for Cee's cup with catlike speed to avoid conflict with Clyde.

"I've been thinking about that since I got on the plane. Everything I've seen points to it being an anomaly. I don't have enough data to know it for a fact." He paused to look around the room, and shook his head at Clyde.

"You may want to take precautions with the overseas contacts." He finished the rest of the sandwiches on his plate and held out a piece of fruit to Clyde to entice him over.

Everything he said made perfect sense. There was more, and his eyes showed it but they could talk in detail privately later. He knew that conversation would not include Cee.

His relief was apparent as Clyde settled on Kronos' lap. "I can not tell you how much we both appreciate this generous gesture," he said with sincerity. He knew the real reason was to avoid interruption of their arrangement, but still, there had been risk for Kronos to come and he wanted to make sure the other man knew he was grateful.

Cee yawned and her eyes fluttered with drowsiness. "The hour is late. Why don't you retire and I will show Kronos to the guest house." He squeezed her hand. "I'll be along shortly."

End Part I
