How do you tell the difference between flotsam and jetsam?

HE (on phone from used book store):  ... and they've got a copy of the OED.

ME:  Really?  Cool.

HE:   Yeah, it takes up a whole shelf.  They want $750 for it.

ME:  ...   ...   We'd buy a stove.

Jetsam is the stuff that gets thrown off the ship. Flotsam is the debris left floating after the ship has sunk.

...was that rhetorical? :-p

LOL. I actually got curious and looked it up, myself!

But I suspect it mostly looks the same when it washes up on the shore.

Egad! That's funny.

But I'm afraid my disinterest in (or possibly irrational prejudice against) things Elfquest even extends to things written by my friends. :shrugs:
