You know that feeling when you put on a new piece of clothing, and wait for someone to notice it and tell you how good you look in this new clothing?

Actually, I can honestly say I've never felt that feeling in my life. I do like wearing things that I think make me less inelegant than I naturally am, but I never expect anyone to notice it or praise it, certainly not based only on my thinking it good-looking.

It seems to me that you predicate too much of your self-esteem, and particularly of your respect for your own body and looks, on what others think.

True. Healthy self-esteem and self-respect are best cultivated from within and not abandoned to the mercy of others' fickle/unreliable opinions.
Easier said than done, though.
Born into society, we rely on feedback from others; we expect our efforts to be appreciated or at least acknowledged. Very few of us can be so self-reliant as to render praise redundant. I can easily identify with the sense of disappointment here. (Although in my experience, the disappointment is never clothes-related, as I prefer my 'invisible' familiar clothes, and tend to feel uncomfortable in conspicuously new clothes, however becoming they may be.)

Consolation: If people didn't notice your new shirt, it is not that they do not care. They may be burdened by distracting thoughts, that make them absentminded and oblivious to the contingent clutter of details. They retain a wholistic sense of you. They rely on the part of you that remains constant - on the whole you that they can always depend on.
