The end of your post about Omar reminded me of a scene in "Center Stage" (that I watched for the gagillionth time on Saturday). Any time we see Eric O. Jones (the gay, African American dancer who gets injured before the workshop but STILL GETS A SPOT IN THE COMPANY AT THE END, because Peter Gallagher is such a marvelous human being) in his bedroom, jazz music is playing and he is surrounded by posters of Miles Davis and the Harlem Renaissance. SRSLY.

why is it that jazz music is always code for blackness? even if it doesn't make any damn sense. it's like, "we can't say we're black" but let's allow the mise-en-bande and the mise-en-scene to say it for us. weirdness..anyway, i appreciate that you tried to read my madness. u r awesome.
ps: i'm so glad you caught the teachin bug! i wish i could have seen you give your lecture. i'm sure you were brilliant. and i musm in philly! (i learned new internet speak and i try it out all the time: musm=missed you so much) lol.
