If it is a long fic with lon flashbacks, then my preference is for the date and time stamp without italics as that keep is organized and easier to read.
If you want to set the flashbacks of a bit, you could always block them with narrower margins on both sides.
Depends on the flashback......sometimes for me reading the date/time flicks me out of the story...were as with the italics it flows more easily into letting the reader share the memory. If the day/date is important then okay, but if it is the memory itself the smooth me into it with th italics. I hope that makes sense.....

I am so stoked to write this!! I had all those trains, planes and long waits in between to flesh this out.
