OF COURSE there will always be books. Who said otherwise? New media co-exists and sometimes modifies the old - it does not absolutely replace it.
I have a friend ( well, acquaintance) who makes his living doing HAND CALLIGRAPHY and illumination. He writes books - the old way. Mostly religious works - the same as did the monks of the middle ages. (Bibles, Torahs, whatever is important enough to be worth making it 'art'. Hand binds them, even. So I can say in truth that the 'hand illuminated manuscript' was not erased by the printing press. Does that mean Gutenberg was wasting his time?
Just because we love the old forms ( as he and I love gaul ink and parchment) doesn't mean we can wish the new forms away. Nor, I think, should we.
I plan to love the new forms too.
