The lack of learning or generalisation mechanisms puts this in the same class as Cyc; interesting but not really an attempt on the AGI problem (yet).

In Wolfram's defense, it seems like they're not claiming it's an AGI, and it's only some observers who're making that mistake. I've been thinking enough about chatterbots and other AIs enough that I can spot problems of something like this system, but not everyone is familiar with ELIZA and its successors. I'd make a harsh Turing Test judge by asking things like, "What would happen if I touched the sun?" where other people would do smalltalk.
