"A Period Of Consequnces"

"The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences."

One of the things that moved me about An Inconvenient Truth was the use of the much-borrowed Churchill quote about a "period of consequences."  It's a great quote for a montage, ( Read more... )

I was just thinking myself about just how good I have it, in comparison to others: my choice of food to eat, bathing water that's hot, warm shelter, an actual car should I choose to use it....above and beyond that, the internet really is a luxury. We take a lot of these things for granted. Not new thoughts, I'm sure, but...

The thing that I worry more about is that climate change affects not only us, but also people that had nothing to do with it, like the tsunami that took out parts of southern Asia a while back... the consequences are not theirs. But the consequences will fall even on those least able to protect themselves.

Yeah. I always want to push that angle of the matter, because it definitely appeals to American culture's idea of justice: it is wrong that everyone pay for the misdeeds of not-everyone. It's especially wrong that you suffer for the screw-ups of people you don't know and have never met. I'm always surprised that the environmental movement hasn't gotten more mileage out of that chunk of memes.

I can actually see why they haven't, though. I don't know how it is elsewhere around the world, but I think self-interest is an industry in the US, if not the GNP. And it infects everyone, even those people who operate from a more enlightened place, like you and me. It's easy to ignore the suffering of people you don't know and have never met. How do you think it is that Bush is able to get away with all he has? How do you think it is that we can buy cheap shoes that have been made in horrendous sweatshops? Even after the truth has been revealed to us, the majority of us ignore the truth, because we're too focused with our own problems and our own pain, over the pain of others. In a world that's getting smaller like this, it's the only way many people can live.

Am I forgiving people for being that way? Not really, know. We need to increase the level of thought in this country. We need to increase the self-awareness and maturity. But that's pretty much the answer to your question. :}

Also, what's the significance of Bush repeating the Japanese 'to be' verb in your avatar, there?

Funny how he mentions that soldiers are grossly underpaid, and that he won't stand for it...and years later, he slashes the budget for paying soldiers.

Yet, distressingly, he retains huge sympathy in the military. People thought Clinton was Teflon? What the hell does it take to get some of the evil they've done to stick to these schmucks ?
