Media Diet: Viggo Mortensen

Today's fun fact: did you know that Viggo Mortensen started as a bard, then multiclassed into ranger? Obviously the latter is better-remembered because it worked out pretty well for him (kingship is a nice gig if you can get it), but his poetic work is also pretty decent. This, too, is from the The Spoken Word Revolution anthology.

My folks and my grandparents really did have daggers for letter openers - these big Cretan knives with bone handles and ornamented sheaths, purchased in Crete. They were really nice (I've heard that, during WWII, the Cretan police were not permitted firearms and so they used weapons just like those to take out German paratroopers). My parents kept theirs carefully pristine and locked away, but my grandparents used theirs to open the mail on a regular basis.

I've seen the type, and I've owned one that was dagger-like enough for pre-9/11 airport security to confiscate (same idiot logic as post-9/11, though - why confiscate things and let the bearer go?).
