Hmm.

So after completely giving up on Doctor Who at some point in late season 6 and only watching the few specials since, I've decided to make a new effort with Capaldi.

After the first two episodes, my verdict: still don't care for Moffat's writing (more the first episode than the second), but I do like Capaldi and I think there's a good chance I ( Read more... )

Yay writing! Go you!

There is a lot to be said for post canon writing :)

There is, yes! Whether it's fix-it or happy ending or what not, there's a certain ... well, certainty :D ... that comes with a closed canon. Knowing that whatever you write, it's not going to get contradicted by new canon, again.

I just bought the ebook--am only some 10% of the way through, but I'm sure there will be Much To Discuss when I finish. :D

Ooooh, yes indeed!

There were things in it that went in ways I'd expected, but even more things that went in ways I hadn't expected.

I'm still trying to come to terms with it All Being Over. Sigh. But it was one damn awesome ride while it lasted.

... also, and this isn't about TDOTL as such but Derek's just confirmed today that Saracen Rue is his cameo character in the books and now I'm just groaning and shaking my head when thinking of all those conquests of his (half of whom were various fangirl cameo characters)...

I haven't seen any of the Capaldi episodes yet, but from the trailers I'm very much looking forward to his Doctor. As you know I love both Ten and Nine, but I think it's possible I'll love Twelve very much indeed. It's still Moffat writing though (and I think my strong dislike for Moffat is not exactly a secret either) so I'm a bit wary.

Yay for wanting to write again!

I have a feeling I'm not going to be at all keen on the season's arc (one of the major reasons why I gave up on New!Who on the first place - I found the seasonal arcs, especially in later series, just pointlessly complicated and convoluted), but as long as the standalone episodes continue to be ... well, as long as I can stand them and as long as Twelve continues to be this wonderful combination of tactless, ruthless pragmatist who is at the same time also deeply troubled by himself, I do want to keep watching.

I'm now actually not at all keen on Clara eventually leaving, since the interplays between those two have so far been the highlight of the first two episodes for me.

Closed canon can be really helpful, yes.

I was completely blocked, as far as writing went, after Last Stand of Dead Men as it .... well, I don't want to say too much in case you ever want to read on and get that far in the series, but while it's a very good book, it's also a very depressing book. The way LSODM ended didn't leave me with much hope for anything at ( ... )

Nods, nods. I very much agree about Moffat's writing. I've caught up with the new episodes and all my quibbles are still there. But then, I'm very quickly falling in love with Capaldi's Doctor, so I think that'll keep me watching. Plus we were promised mostly stand-alone stories this series and I hope that's true.
I don't want Clara to leave any time soon either.

I'll definitely read on in the Skulduggery Pleasant series. I liked the first books, but chicken that I am I wanted to know if both Valkyrie and Skul make it out alive.

I'm not at all keen on the Missy arc, I think. But as long as she only pops in for a moment or two per episode until the season finale, maybe it won't be too much of an issue with single episodes...

The more I think about Twelve, the more I like him. I've even come to a realisation that Capaldi is actually damn hot. I didn't expect to start thinking that way any time soon. :-|

Heh. Yes. That's a very justified concern with SP. In case you haven't come across spoilers yet, and really want to know, although I'm rather hesitant about spoilers, [Spoiler (click to open)] especially since there's a part in the final book where not knowing will have a much stronger effect ... but yes, they both live. To mine, and probably most people's great shock.
