Reading Summary: August 2012

Sep 01, 2012 11:12

Another month closer to the end of 2012, and another month to add to the list of books I've read this yearAugust was an odd month, reading-wise - the first month this year that I stayed under ten books. I'm mostly "blaming" my first read of the month for that, as pretty much all of August's free time has been taken up by discussing it, and all of ( Read more... )

Yay for KOTW! It was definitely worth the wait. Problem now is waiting for the next...

Pity about the meh. Glad you did like it better than the first and that you think you might read more Artemis Fowl, pity it was still meh. Hope that the next will be better for you again.

Words fail me at Grossman's description of Estonian, and at Mallory's names for foreigners. I don't suppose they were assumed names for foreign parts either?

A whole year, I assume, until book eight... ~weeps~

I don't suppose they were assumed names for foreign parts either?

I would have been prepared to let the "Trent" slide at first as it's quite possible a person who has emigrated to the US as a child adopts a more American-sounding name, even without it being mentioned in the book.

But then came the "Gwynn" with no explanation for her origin apart from "having an Eastern European accent", and then when we met "Grimley Jones, the Scandinavian warlock in charge of all Scandinavia", with whom the main male hottie spoke "a Scandinavian language" to explain some goings-on. So by the end and with no explanation for why everyone foreign has a name more suited for people from English-speaking countries, I just assumed it never even occurred to the author that by and large, foreigners tend to have slightly different names.

Eeee! This makes me so excited for KotW!!! I just got the audiobook and started listening to it last night (Sprout does not allow for physical books *sigh*).

So I'll be back to squee with you in a few days!

Ohh, I'm glad the audiobook is out already too! I can see how having a small person around makes spending time with physical books difficult. *g*

It's a long book (the longest yet), so it'll probably take a while to listen to, but so worth it.

My biggest problem with it is having to wait for the next one now...

Oh, and I just loved The Magicians :) I guess it figures - never liked Harry Potter very much (read through 4,5 books).

I was surrounded by enough adolescent, whiny angst in my youth to last me a lifetime. I don't need to read about more whiny middle-class brats going through existential crisis for no determinable reason at all. :P

Aga jah, eks ta ole, maitsed on erinevad. Ja jube igav oleks, kui kõik raamatud oleksid ühesugused. :D
