A Sense of Community

I had a dream last night, that a Lebanese woman knocked on my door and gave me a doll and some cookies.  In my dream, she was my neighbor and she was just reaching out in kindness.  When I woke up, I couldn't get my mind off of it, and I started remembering some of my favorite neighbors.

The first apartment I lived in on my own without a roommate ( Read more... )

Awww...the tale of your Russian neighbors brought a tear to my eye. I love how appreciative you are of your experiences, and that you both acknowledge and value how unique they were/are. Love your plan to "not be a stranger"...such a difference this can make in making a dwelling into home.

Those are some great memories! Creating that atmosphere can take some work but it is definitely worth it.

I agree! I think you guys have done a good job of that where you live as well.

Big Hug... as I was reading, I thought about our neighborhood and then I was reading about our neighborhood! Thank you for being to careful and calling us the "Smith" family-- very sweet. I'm glad you're closer so you can hang out in the 'hood more often.

You're welcome. I'm always careful to protect identities online, but I had to share about how special your neighborhood is. I feel like I belong whenever I'm on your street. I think I know more of your neighbors than I do my own. :)

I enjoyed reading this! The value of community has definitely become more important for me as I've gotten older. Where I live now, all the neighbors are on 5 acre plots so we're not physically as close to each other as we might be in town (or certainly in an apartment), but it's the closest neighborhood I've lived in since I've been an adult in the sense that we all know each other at least casually and make it a point to introduce ourselves when we've had new people move in. I like your conscious effort to find a way to feel connected within your community. It really makes a big difference!

Yes, I've learned that I've been really lucky to have had wonderful neighbor experiences in the past. I love actually knowing the faces or names of the people who share my neighborhood.

The more I think about it, the subject of neighbors really is a rich source of some great storytelling!
